La primavera ya empieza a saludarnos timidamente con sus primeras flores. Aunque podemos encontrar flores durante todo el año, no hay duda de que ésta es la mejor época, al menos al aire libre...

Después de la escasez de precipitaciones de este invierno, un poco de riego y las lluvias de hace un par de días han sentado bien a algunas plantas, especialmente a las liliáceas que florecen ahora.

Estos narcisos son ornamentales, pero por los campos (incluso de secano) podremos encontrarnos los nazarenos, Muscari neglectum también llamados ajuelas, matacandiles, jacinto de racimo o piececillos de Nuestra Señora (entre otros)

Spring is starting to say a shy hello with her first flowers. Although we can find flowers all year long, there is no doubt that this is the best time, at least outside…

After the scarce rains of this winter, a bit of watering and the showers of two days ago have made a power of good to some plants, especially to the Liliaceae that flower now.

These daffodils are ornamental, but in fields (even rainfed crops) we can find starch grape hyacinths, Muscari neglectum (among others)

Sus hojas son cilíndricas pero, a diferencia de las especies del género Allium, no huelen a ajo y en la parte superior de la inflorescencia suele haber unas flores más pequeñas de color violeta más pálido que son estériles.

Their leaves are cylindrical but unlike Allium species they don´t smell like garlic, and in the upper part of the inflorescence there are some smaller light violet coloured flowers that are sterile.

Jornada Técnica sobre Reconocimiento de Plántulas de Malas Hierbas

El  próximo miércoles 15 de febrero se celebrará en la FIMA 2012 una Jornada Técnica sobre Reconocimiento de Plántulas de Malas Hierbas, organizada por la Escuela Politécnica Superior de Huesca de la Universidad de Zaragoza en colaboración con el CITA del Gobierno de Aragón. El programa, en el que se incluyen criterios de reconocimiento tanto para monocotiledóneas como dicotiledóneas estará desarrollado por Joaquín Aibar (EPSH), Carlos Zaragoza (CITA) y Alicia Cirujeda (CITA) y también incluirá una parte práctica para poder ver y tocar las plántulas en vivo.

En el control de malas hierbas es muy importante su reconocimiento en los estados iniciales para poder tomar las medidas oportunas cuanto antes y evitar males mayores, así que estos conocimientos serán de gran utilidad para todos aquellos que estén de alguna manera relacionados con ello: técnicos, agricultores, profesionales, estudiantes…y cualquier persona interesada en el tema.

Next February 15th Wednesday, a Weed Seedlings Identification Day will be held at FIMA 2012 (International Fair of Agricultural Machinery), organized by the Escuela Politécnica Superior de Huesca of University of Zaragoza in collaboration with CITA of Government of Aragon. The program which included recognition criteria for both mono and dicotyledonae will be developed by Joaquín Aibar (EPSH), Carlos Zaragoza (CITA) and Alicia Cirujeda (CITA) and will also include a practical part for being able to see and touch real seedlings.

Dealing with weed control it is very important a prognosis in early stages for being able to take the appropriate measures as soon as possible in order to avoid bigger problems, so this knowledge will be useful for all those who are somehow related to it: technicians, farmers, professionals, students…and any person interested in this matter.

Ayer los alumnos del Curso de Posgrado de Protección Vegetal Sostenible de la Universidad de Zaragoza tuvieron una clase práctica en el CITA que incluía una visita a nuestro jardín.
Yesterday the students of the Sustainable Plant Protection Postgraduate Course from University of Zaragoza had a practical lesson at CITA that included a visit to our garden.

Los profesores Carlos Zaragoza y Joaquín Aibar se encargaron de explicar los detalles de cada planta, lo que las caracteriza, “trucos” para identificarlas y alguna anécdota relacionada que pueda hacer más fácil recordarlas.   
Teachers Carlos Zaragoza and Joaquín Aibar were in charge of explaining all the details of each plant, their characteristics, "tricks" to identify them and some related anecdotes that could be useful for making them easier to remember .

Mientras los alumnos tomaban notas, algunos gatitos curiosos también permanecieron atentos a las explicaciones…eso sí estratégicamente acomodados al sol de la tarde.
While students took  notes, some gossipy kittens paid attention to the explanations, too… strategically settled themselves comfortably in the afternoon sun, though.

Feliz año! Parece que volvemos a la vida “normal”. Después de una semana de nieblas y de no ver el sol, hoy el día ha amanecido despejado, y ese cielo abierto ha dado lugar a una de las típicas heladas habituales en estas fechas. Cierto que hasta hace pocos días el otoño/invierno ha sido en general más cálido de lo habitual, pero las temperaturas ya han caído a los valores propios de enero. Lo que sí es más inquietante es la falta de precipitaciones. La niebla y una ligera lluvia hace un par de días han proporcionado un poco de humedad, que ha venido bien a las macetas ya algo secas.

Happy new year! It seems we come back to “normal life”. After a whole week of fog that didn´t allow us to see the sun, today the day has dawned clear, and that open sky has brought one of the typical frosts quite frequent in this season.
It´s true that until just a few days ago the Autumn/Winter has been warmer than usual in general, but temperatures have fallen down to characteristic January values. What is more worrying is the lack of rain. Fog and a light rain a couple days ago had provided a bit of humidity which has been good for the flowerpots, already a bit dry.

Es ahora cuando emergen plántulas que se pueden encontrar como arvenses en cultivos de invierno (secano) y aunque no necesitan demasiada agua sí requieren al menos un mínimo.

Right now are emerging seedlings that could be found in winter crops (dryland) and although they don´t need too much water at least a minimum is required.

It is very curious to see how the ice covers each and every hair (in those plants which have them) creating amazing artworks…
