Now yes, after a short holidays and then attending a Workshop in Huesca last week, here we go again…

With the jimsonweed, Datura stramonium, that plant that now can be seen frequently both in the fields and in the News being the star of a great number of articles and reports in the media (due to the sad feature, recently published, of a couple boys that died after consuming a preparation made with it).
It is a typical Solanaceae summer weed, quite frequent in irrigation crops.

Its flowers are white and tubular, trumpet shaped

The fruit is also characteristic, covered with spines and when ripens its 4 valves open, letting their black seeds be seen

It can reach a great height. In this photo for example of a corn crop you can see how it almost goes above corn plants:
Its smell is quite unpleasant and can be perceived by just touching it slightly, if you touch it you have to be careful of avoid rubbing your eyes before washing your hands for example.
Is HIGHLY TOXIC to both animals and humans.
In Middle Ages it was already used in witchcraft due to its content in alkaloids, so this is not anything new. But from being hallucinogen to being lethal there is only a very thin thread...
The fact that it frighten rodents away makes that farmers leave some plants grow in their orchards or gardens.
So the important thing is to know it in order to take the proper precautions.

Coming back to the Workshop I mentioned above, lately we´ve been spending quite a lot of our energies on organizing it. It has been a workshop on Weed Science of the EWRS (European Weed Research Society) and was finally held in Huesca last week. Participants from 18 countries were there and they discussed issues related to weed management in arid and semiarid climates and weed management systems in vegetables. I leave you with a photo of the group made during a visit to Sababa castle, after being in an organic farm and some rice crops in Cinco Villas.
