Autumn colours are also approaching our garden a little bit

Y entre tantos tostados y dorados destaca la bonita flor del azafrán (Crocus sativus)

No la tenemos como arvense, claro pero… entre col y col, lechuga.

De hecho su cultivo es peculiar y muy laborioso.

We don´t have it as a weed, though…but variety is the spice of life.

Los estigmas, de un color rojo brillante, son lo que una vez tostados y secos constituyen la especia que conocemos como azafrán. Además, de sus estambres, con su amarillo intenso, también se obtiene un colorante natural.

The stigmas, bright red, are which once dried and toasted are known as the saffron spice. Furthermore, from the stamen, with its deep yellow, a natural coloring is obtained.

Pertenece a la familia de las Iridáceas y florece entre finales de octubre y principios de noviembre. Las flores, llamadas rosas del azafrán, tienen un delicioso aroma, muy sutil y delicado.

It belongs to Iridaceae family and blooms between the end of October and early November. The flowers, called saffron roses, have a delicious, very subtle and delicate scent

Es una especia muy apreciada en gastronomía que, como muchas especias, también tiene algunas propiedades medicinales. Suelen ser necesarias más de 100.000 flores para obtener un kilo de azafrán, lo que nos da una idea de porqué su precio es tan elevado.

In gastronomy is a greatly appreciated spice and, like most spices, has some medicinal properties. More than 100.000 flowers are usually needed for obtaining a kilogram of saffron, and that gives us an idea of why its price is so high.

El viernes, precisamente en la maceta donde crece la datura, de la que hablábamos recientemente, ha aparecido un invitado “de lujo”, o más bien habría que decir “de muerte”, porque es una oruga de la “esfinge de la muerte” o “esfinge de la calavera” Acherontia atropos (es la mariposa que aparece en la película “El silencio de los corderos”, para aquellos que la hayan visto…)
On Friday, on the very plant pot where Datura grows which we talk about recently, a “luxury guest” appeared or rather we should say a “guest of death”, because it is a caterpillar of “Death´s-head Hawkmoth” Acherontia atropos (is the moth that appears in the film “The Silence of the Lambs” for those of you who had seen it…)

La datura es una de las especies hospedadoras de esta bonita oruga (hay que reconocerlo, es bonita aunque el nombre sea espantoso) a la que le gustan especialmente las solanáceas. La hembra pone un huevo en la planta y cuando sale la oruga ésta se alimenta de ella (en nuestra maceta ¡la ha dejado pelada!), llega a medir hasta 13 cm y muda varias veces cambiando su coloración, volviéndose sucesivamente más amarilla y con colores más brillantes, hasta que antes de pasar a pupa se oscurece y endurece (parece mentira, porque en estos momentos tiene pinta de gominola, suave y blandita)
The jimson weed is one of the host species of this beautiful caterpillar (admittedly is beautiful although the name was dreadful) which is especially keen on Solanaceae. The female lay one egg on the hostplant and when the caterpillar hatches out it will feed on it (in our plant pot has left it bare!), it reaches up to 13 cm and shed the skin several times changing its coloration turning more yellow and with brighter colours successively until, before turning to the pupa stage, it darkens and hardens (hard to believe because right now it seems like a jelly candy, so smooth and soft)

Esta mañana ya no la hemos visto, así que probablemente se habrá enterrado en la tierra de la maceta para formar su crisálida. Hasta que eclosione en mariposa (sí, esa que tiene el dibujo de una calavera en el dorso del tórax). Por la datura no nos preocupamos, se recuperará sin problemas.
This morning we haven´t seen it anymore so probably it will have buried itself into the ground of the plant pot turned into a chrysalis. Until hatching into a butterfly (yes that with a skull drawing on the back of its thorax). We don´t worry about the jimson weed, it will recover without any problem.

 A lo largo del verano hemos tenido más visitantes "de lujo". Por aquí han ido pasando (y algunos aún siguen) unos cuantos estudiantes: unos a hacer prácticas, otros a trabajar, otros con sus proyectos de fin de carrera...

Throughout the summer we´ve had more “luxury guests”. Several students have been here (some of them still are): some doing practices, some working, others with their university final works…
